We also met an interesting young fellow at Jill's Cafe. After a lengthy
discussion about motorcycle and bicycle top speeds he revealed that he was known
by all the local population simply as "Speed Demon". Hmmm? My kind
of guy I thought. He seemed considerably disappointed when he inquired
about the top speed I had attained on the ST1300 and I honestly answered 145
mph.
I considered that I should direct the conversation to something he could better identify with. I told him that I too was a bicyclist and enjoyed going as fast as I could even if that top speed drops every year as I age. He asked about my bicycle top speed. I honestly boasted that I had gone 64mph down mountain highways on a tandem bicycle. I speculated that I might go about 38 to 40mph for a very short sprint on level ground. Ok, that might be a stretch for me these days but this fellow was not easy to impress. After he had heard my proclamations he countered that he had gone 69 mph down hill and could go 45 mph on level ground and had done both on the mountain bike in this picture. Say dude, you are a Speed Demon. He sat at the table for at least half an hour chatting with us. When the waitress asked him what he wanted he replied that he was just resting there for awhile. He was drinking a soft drink that he purchased from a machine across the street. I liked Speed Demon. |
